ABSTRACT
The number of patients using complete dental prostheses is on the increase due to higher mean longevity. This, in turn, indicates the need for increased improvement of the quality of prostheses and their comfort of use. The application of digital technologies to dentistry, mainly prosthetics, has made it possible to produce complete acrylic prostheses. It is believed that digital technology has a potential to automatize a number of production stages of dental prostheses. Moreover, CAD/CAM provides, among others, considerable saving of time, precision, repeatability and sterile conditions of work. Acrylic resins and their inadequate mechanical properties are mainly blamed for failures in the manufacture of complete prostheses using the traditional method. Acrylic resins used in CAD/CAM for the manufacture of complete prostheses are similar to the traditional ones in terms of chemical properties; however, they have a totally different method of processing. It is possible to mill complete prostheses from a single polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) block or separate blocks for the prosthesis’ plate and artificial teeth. More and more modern acrylic materials, whose quality – according to the manufacturers – is considered to outweigh traditional acryl resins in many respects, are being launched on the market.
