ABSTRACT
Based on Polish literature on the subject, adverse impact of removable partial dentures on the prosthetic foundation has been discussed. Partial removable acrylic dentures are popular in Poland due to reimbursement by the National Health Found. Patients also choose this type of dentures for economic reasons, since they are the cheapest prosthetic restorations in cases when refunding is not available. The authors of many studies point out the hygienic neglect on the part of the removable denture wearers, concerning the dentures and the residual dentition, as well as the improper use of the appliances without the night break. It leads to the development of inflammation of the mucosa (catarrhal, hypertrophic), often complicated by fungal infections, and manifested with discomfort in the form of pain, burning or other subjective sensations. Dental caries and periodontal inflammation, which often leads to tooth mobility and their ultimate loss, may develop in the residual dentition. Bone base may become atrophic. In order to reduce the harmful influence of removable partial acrylic dentures on the denture base, they should be properly fabricated and the patients should receive instruction on their usage, storage and hygiene.
