ABSTRACT
Cranio-mandibular disorders can affect people
of all ages. The presence or absence of teeth does
not determine the occurrence of parafunctions
such as bruxism. With age, degenerative
changes are more common in the aetiology of
temporomandibular disorders. Particularly in
edentulous patients, it is important to diagnose
the symptoms of temporomandibular disorders
localized extra-orally, such as jaw movement
disorders, tension-type headaches or hearing
disorders. It is not uncommon for these symptoms
to be exacerbated by many years of using complete
dentures with lowered vertical dimension of
occlusion. The diagnosis of an active form of
temporomandibular dysfunction necessitates
a step-by-step therapeutic approach. A case of
a patient suffering from temporomandibular
disorder, tinnitus and reduced vertical dimension
of occlusion on full dentures was described.
Authors reflect on TMD problems in elderly
patients. Diagnostic and therapeutic protocol with
the use of adaptation splint has been presented.
The patient’s case is an argument for the need of
interdisciplinary cooperation between doctors of various specialties to ensure good standards of
diagnosis and treatment of TMD patients.
