ABSTRACT
Background:
Preprosthetic orthodontic and orthodontic-surgical treatments belong to procedures whose aim is obtaining favourable conditions for the prosthetic base for the application and proper functioning of prosthetic restorations.
Aim:
To illustrate methods of preprosthetic orthodontic treatment such as intrusion and extrusion of the teeth, on the basis of literature review.
Material and methods:
PubMed and Polska Bibliografia Lekarska were searched using key words: intrusion, extrusion, preprosthetic orthodontic preparation. 20 articles were used in this paper.
Results:
The paper discusses possibilities and limitations of the intrusion and extrusion methods in preprosthetic preparation, possible complications and long-term observations. Methods of increasing orthodontic anchorage have also been presented. The reaction of periodontium and the ferrule effect have been emphasized.
Conclusions:
Preprosthetic orthodontic treatment creates new possibilities and improves the work of a prosthetics specialist. The development of this modern methods allows preservation of teeth previously qualified for removal.
