Cast posts and cores removal requires adequate knowledge and experience of the dentist, a proper assessment of the clinical case and the qualification for the procedure. The need of non-surgical root canal re-treatment, loss of retention or breakage of the post and leakage caused by secondary caries are indications for cast posts and cores removal. The method of the cast posts and cores removal should depend on the type of the cast post and core, the material the post is made of, as well as the type of cement used to cement the cast post and core. The research shows that with the proper qualification and technique used the post removal can be safe, predictable and successful.
