ABSTRACT
The article discusses the more and more frequent issue of symptoms of depression among dental patients. Awareness of these symptoms enables the dentist to identify mental disorders in patients, which may result in an earlier referral to a specialist. The issue of mental disorders is particularly important for dentists specializing in prosthodontic treatment, as symptoms of depression occur three times more frequently in people over 65 than in other age groups. At the same time, a higher prevalence of tooth loss is also observed in this population. During the prosthodontic treatment, depression affects patients' quality of life and their ability to adapt to dentures. Studies have shown that individuals with symptoms of depression are more likely to report negative feelings about their dentures and experience difficulties in cooperating during oral rehabilitation. Furthermore, their personal evaluation of oral health often contrasts with the actual clinical condition. The authors highlight the importance of an appropriated diagnosis and evaluation of patients' emotional well-being, recommending the use of tools like the Geriatric Depression Scale. Understanding the connection between depression and prosthetic treatment is vital for better therapeutic outcomes and an improved quality of life for patients. The article concludes with a recommendation for dentists to be aware to signs of depression in their patients and adjust their approach to address their emotional and psychological needs.
